Roche Holding AG (China) – Yiting Zhou – 2025
Summary
Developed the 2024 CO2 Roadmap for Roche Diagnostics Suzhou under Roche’s K18 Sustainability Directive, verifying emission data, and identifying future mitigation measures to guide the site’s long-term decarbonization strategy.
Goals
As an EDF Climate Corps Fellow at Roche Diagnostics Suzhou, Yiting Zhou was tasked with developing the 2024 CO2 Roadmap to support Roche’s commitment to net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The fellowship aimed to evaluate the site’s emission-reduction progress, verify data accuracy, and identify future opportunities for decarbonization in alignment with Roche’s K18 Sustainability Directive and global climate milestones for 2025 and 2029.
Solutions
To achieve these goals, Zhou collaborated with the Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) and Energy teams to collect and verify energy and CO2 data for 2022 and 2024. She updated emission factors using the latest standards, confirming a significant Scope 2 reduction resulting from RDSZ’s 100% renewable electricity procurement. Zhou also participated in the company’s CO2 Roadmap workshop, where representatives from multiple departments discussed and proposed reduction initiatives. She summarized and consolidated these outcomes into a list of 24 actionable GHG-reduction measures, categorized into Energy Reduction, Identification of Undesired Energies, and Energy Substitution. The verified data and prioritized actions were integrated into the comprehensive 2024 RDSZ CO2 Roadmap, aligning site-level actions with Roche’s global sustainability goals.
Potential Impact
The 2024 RDSZ CO2 Roadmap provides Roche Diagnostics Suzhou with a data-driven framework for sustainable emission reduction and energy efficiency improvement. Through collaborative analysis and the CO2 Roadmap workshop, Zhou helped synthesize cross-departmental insights into 24 actionable measures that guide future decarbonization planning. The verified data confirmed a decrease in Scope 2 emissions between 2022 and 2024, mainly driven by renewable electricity adoption. By establishing consistent data methods and integrating department-level actions, Zhou’s work enhances RDSZ’s capacity to implement and monitor emission-reduction initiatives, advancing progress toward Roche’s 2029 and 2050 net-zero commitments.
