Silver Lake Partners – Maggie Yuan – 2022

Goals

Silver Lake is a global technology investment firm, with more than $92 billion in combined assets under management and committed capital and a team of professionals based in North America, Europe and Asia. With ESG matters becoming more important to regulators, investors, and customers, Silver Lake sought to enhance its climate reporting and engagement with management teams. Silver Lake enlisted Maggie Yuan to advance their sustainability reporting strategy and launch portfolio company engagement initiatives.

Solutions

Maggie approached this challenge in three parts:

  • Benchmark company progress on ESG initiatives and environmental stewardship against TCFD guidelines and industry peers. After interviewing company stakeholders to understand existing programs, Maggie created a reporting roadmap showing the progress Silver Lake had already made and proposed new initiatives that would set the company up for TCFD-aligned reporting.
  • Onboard a carbon accounting vendor. To assess areas of climate risk, Silver Lake found a carbon accounting partner to calculate its financed emissions footprint. Maggie collected data and worked with the partner to launch Silver Lake’s first financed emissions footprint calculation.
  • Engage portfolio companies through two new initiatives. Maggie launched an inaugural cohort of portfolio companies to track carbon emissions for the first time. Maggie also planned an ESG working group session to educate portfolio companies on carbon dioxide removal technologies.

Potential Impact

With Maggie’s assistance, Silver Lake has successfully launched a number of portfolio engagement initiatives and will use her TCFD reporting roadmap and financed emissions analysis to prioritize future ESG initiatives. Maggie’s EDF fellowship further integrated Silver Lake in their portfolio companies’ ESG strategies and better positioned Silver Lake to update their 2022 ESG report with more robust climate progress.
