TCL (China) – Haonan Xu – 2018

Goals

TCL Environmental Technology Co., Ltd provides environmental science and engineering services geared toward waste-water management and removal of hazardous waste. The company enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Haonan Xu to help them cut energy and materials costs and reduce carbon emissions on a project located in Guangdong Province, China.

Solutions

Because of the large number of motors and pumps employed on the site, TCL was looking to find renewable energy sources to help reduce electricity usage. After field research and a feasibility analysis, Xu recommended a plan to install a distributed photovoltaic power generation station. The solar panels would be able to provide most of the electricity needed at the location.

Xu also identified that the biochemical treatment workshop would benefit from process improvement. To help with this, he revised the materials supply regulation and frequency, which improved overall efficiency. Finally, after researching the possibilities of switching to a new biological filter bed, Xu advised TCL to remain with the current activated carbon adsorption towers which he proved to have more efficient and economic performance.

Potential Impact

If fully implemented, Xu’s recommendations could result in 3,153,600 kWh of annual electricity savings, a net present value of over $750,000 and 1,660 metric tons of CO2 emissions reductions.
