Tokai Carbon Group – Ambar Nag – 2025

Ambar compiled Tokai Carbon GE (TCGE)’s Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) inventory and crafted a decarbonization roadmap with GHG reduction pathways utilizing alternative energy and innovative technologies. He also helped streamline TCGE’s ESG (environmental, social, and governance) reporting by redesigning their ESG Scorecard.

TCGE is a manufacturer of high-quality graphite electrodes supplying to the US steel industry. As a member of the Tokai Carbon global group of companies, TCGE is aligned with the group’s target of reducing GHG emissions by 25% (compared to 2018) by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Ambar was brought in to estimate TCGE’s GHG emissions across its operations and value chain, recommend financially viable options for abatement, and enhance sustainability reporting at TCGE.

Ambar began by acquiring process and business understanding through site visits and meetings with TCGE staff across Operations, Finance, HR, and Supply Chain. He validated Scope 1&2 emissions reporting, fixing errors and omissions, and went on to compile a Scope 3 GHG inventory capturing emission sources material to TCGE. He then conducted a benchmarking of TCGE?s emissions against industry peers and developed detailed documentation to support a future assurance audit. To advance TCGE’s carbon neutrality goal, Ambar crafted a decarbonization roadmap with the prospect of delivering annual GHG reductions of 35,000 MTCO2e. Finally, he revamped the company ESG Scorecard to better engage internal audiences and facilitate reporting to external partners.

As an outcome of the fellowship, TCGE’s GHG inventory was made more accurate, complete, and compliant with industry best practice encompassing both operational (Scope 1&2) and value chain (Scope 3) emissions potentially boosting TCGE’s sustainability ratings by demonstrating transparency. TCGE now has a suite of decarbonization ideas to evaluate for feasibility, ranging from quick wins to moonshot projects. Finally, they have an enhanced ESG reporting capability to highlight problems as well as recognize progress.
