Climate Corps Projects

Under Armour, Inc. – Samantha Klug – 2018

Goals

To further advance performance across the value chain, Under Armour, a leading inventor, marketer and distributor of branded performance athletic apparel, footwear and accessories, brought on EDF Climate Corps fellow Samantha Klug for three tasks: refining Under Armour’s supplier data management to support decision-making processes, expanding and analyzing supplier participation in the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s (SAC) environmental sustainability self-assessment, and enrolling suppliers in a new resource efficiency capacity building program.

Solutions

Klug researched, outlined and modeled data-based supplier engagement mechanisms with the Under Armour sustainability team, as well as communicated about updates with supply chain leadership. She engaged sourcing managers and suppliers, further expanding the adoption of the SAC’s Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM). Klug also engaged with textile mills and helped to launch a partnership aimed at reducing their use of energy, water, and chemicals.

Potential Impact

Klug’s work will help Under Armour drive supply chain environmental footprint reductions by offering expanded access to supplier data, improving analytical capabilities, increasing cross-functional alignment, and reinforcing supplier engagement strategies.

This expanded access to data will be used to assess high opportunity areas for new partnerships in other countries and impact areas, as well as deploy more mechanisms to support manufacturing partners in their sustainability work.
