Volvo North America – Bolaji Sadiku – 2022

Goals

Challenged by the global supply chain crisis, the Volvo Group North America Service Market Logistics (SML) team faces challenges in achieving its 2025 target of 30% CO2 emissions reduction in transport (with 2019 as the base year). With just 3 years to go, the Volvo group enlisted Bolaji Sadiku to ensure that a pathway to reduce CO2 in transport significantly is developed through a detailed strategy of how best to reach the target within the short time left, create awareness of sustainability, and engage with all relevant stakeholders.

Solutions

The first step Bolaji took was to conduct interviews with top and mid-level management to gauge their awareness and interest in the current CO2 emissions situation. This is followed up with a comprehensive survey sent out to all staff of the Volvo group SML unit to generate ideas, understand impediments, and evaluate their level of awareness.

Then, a detailed strategy to reduce emissions within the limited time left is developed. To ensure success, a quantitative model is developed to complement the highly qualitative strategy already developed internally with a detailed approach to bring all stakeholders on board. Cost reduction, customer satisfaction, and CO2 emissions reduction are all aligned within the proposed strategy.

Potential Impact

Using this quantitative model, Volvo group SML NA has a clear pathway to the target 30% reduction through reduced distance traveled, reduced transport emission factors, and more shipments by road. Improved customer satisfaction, brand image, and reduced costs are some of the benefits of the proposed strategy while also proffering innovative ways to tackle the global supply chain crisis.
