Walmart – Asfay Raihan – 2025

Asfay Raihan advanced Walmart’s climate strategy by enhancing supplier engagement, updating renewable energy methodology to align with future regulations, and optimizing emissions reductions alongside financial impact, supporting decarbonization across the company’s global value chain.

Walmart has committed to achieving zero emissions across its operations (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2040 and is actively working to reduce value chain emissions through its Project Gigaton initiative. As part of its broader climate strategy, the company is focused on deepening supplier engagement and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy to meet its ambitious goal of sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2035. To support these efforts, Asfay Raihan joined Walmart as a 2025 EDF Climate Corps Fellow. His work centered on advancing supplier activation, contributing to strategic initiatives supporting Walmart’s renewable energy goals, and developing approaches to optimize emissions reductions while balancing financial performance and regulatory alignment.

To support Walmart’s climate goals, Asfay focused on strengthening supplier engagement by evaluating data maturity and identifying emissions hotspots across key suppliers. He reviewed the company’s renewable energy reporting practices and recommended a streamlined, forward-looking approach aligned with evolving standards. He also developed a practical framework to guide the strategic use of renewable energy certificates, helping balance emissions reductions with financial and regulatory priorities. In addition, Asfay supported the creation of supplier training materials on Scope 2, Scope 3, and renewable energy as part of Walmart’s Gigaton 2.0 platform.

Asfay’s work supports Walmart’s ability to advance its climate goals by strengthening supplier engagement and improving emissions data quality. His roadmap lays the foundation for more targeted supplier action across the value chain. By contributing to Walmart’s renewable energy strategy, his efforts enable the company to take more informed, future-ready steps toward its 100% renewable energy target, ultimately helping build a more sustainable and resilient global footprint.
