Zheliu – Weibin Zhang – 2024

Weibin Zhang developed an actionable framework and recommendations for developing a low-carbon countryside in Liu Cheng Township and beyond in China.

Weibin Zhang served as a fellow at the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning, focusing on the Low-Carbon Rural Initiative. He aimed to reduce carbon emissions, improve rural living standards, and support green economic transformation through low-carbon construction. Weibin advanced rural low-carbon development by analyzing existing projects and creating standardized pathways for sustainable construction. His work helped rural communities address climate change and achieve economic, social, and ecological sustainability.

Weibin prepared a carbon accounting report for Liucheng Township through qualitative and quantitative research, including data on carbon emissions and forestry carbon sinks. He conducted a comparative analysis of low-carbon pathways in rural villages in China and Rwanda to optimize the low-carbon construction program in Liucheng She Town. By integrating initiatives from other regions of China, Weibin developed a comprehensive, standardized program for net-zero carbon rural construction.

The study’s findings provide valuable guidance for low-carbon rural development in Liucheng Township and other regions in China. They offer a framework for future projects that could significantly impact rural low-carbon initiatives. By optimizing and standardizing low-carbon construction pathways, Weibin summarized replicable and scalable practices for low- and zero-carbon demonstration villages with Chinese characteristics. These efforts promote the modernization and ecological development of rural areas in China and globally, laying the foundation for a future low-carbon society.
