The Scope 3 Playbook: Mitigation Strategies for Companies
With the mission to achieve net zero goals by 2030, companies worldwide are recognizing the critical need to address their full spectrum of greenhouse gas emissions. While many have made significant strides in managing direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions, tackling Scope 3 emissions remains a formidable challenge. These emissions, which occur throughout a company’s value chain, often constitute the largest portion of a company’s carbon footprint. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Scope 3 emissions are often 11.4 times greater than a company’s direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2 combined).
To help companies address these emissions, we’re launching a new webinar series, “The Scope 3 Playbook: Mitigation Strategies for Companies” for a deep dive with experts and sustainability leaders on the best Scope 3 strategies.
Understanding the Scope 3 Challenge
Scope 3 emissions include all indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. This encompasses everything from the production of purchased goods and services to transportation and distribution, to the use of sold products and end-of-life treatment.
The Importance of Tackling Scope 3 Emissions Now
- Magnitude and Impact: For many companies, Scope 3 emissions represent the largest share of their total greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing these emissions is essential for making significant progress toward net zero targets.
- Regulatory and Market Pressure: Increasingly, governments and regulatory bodies are implementing stricter reporting requirements for Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, investors, consumers and employees are demanding greater transparency and accountability in corporate climate actions.
- Competitive Advantage: Companies that proactively manage their Scope 3 emissions can differentiate themselves as leaders in sustainability, attracting environmentally-conscious customers and investors.
- Resilience and Risk Management: Understanding and managing Scope 3 emissions helps companies identify vulnerabilities in their supply chains and develop more resilient and sustainable business practices.
Despite the call for more action on companies’ value chains, Scope 3 emissions have been notoriously difficult to quantify and manage. Companies often find it cumbersome to tackle, especially when it involves working with their suppliers in embarking on a net zero journey. EDF’s Net Zero Action Accelerator (NZAA) previously hosted a webinar series centered on “Enhancing Supplier Engagement for Climate Action,“ highlighting best practices and new frameworks to advance value chain action.
To continue supporting companies with Scope 3 action, NZAA is partnering with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions Race to Zero this Fall to launch a new webinar series that will focus on a deep dive into some of the most pressing topics surrounding Scope 3 emissions.
